What a Battery Replacement Involves
No affiliate links on this site, and nothing here is ranked. This page describes what the work is and does not tell you how to do it — lithium cells are a genuine hazard and a damaged one can ignite.

What the work actually is
Opening the device, which on most phones means softening adhesive with heat and separating either the screen or the back panel.
Disconnecting and removing the old cell, which is itself glued down — and this is the step where damage happens, because levering a lithium pouch cell punctures it. For broader repair and consumer-rights context, Fairphone is another useful reference.
Fitting the new cell, replacing adhesive, reassembling, and resealing.
And then pairing where the device requires it, which determines whether battery health reporting works afterwards.
Twenty minutes to an hour for somebody equipped and practised. Considerably longer for anybody else, with a meaningfully higher chance of breaking something else — most often the screen, which converts a small repair into a large one.
Why this site does not describe the steps
A punctured lithium cell can ignite, and the failure is fast and difficult to extinguish.
The risk is not theoretical and it is concentrated precisely in the removal step, which is the part that looks straightforward in a video.

What it costs, in structure
Three components.
The cell, which for covered devices has a published indicative price.
Labour, which varies by shop and by how difficult the device is to open — and the repairability score is a rough proxy for that.
And adhesive and consumables, which are minor and are occasionally itemised.
As a proportion, a battery replacement is typically a small fraction of a replacement device, which is what makes the repair-or-replace arithmetic so clear in this particular case.
When to have it done
When the device no longer lasts the day it used to, rather than at a particular health percentage.
Before a long trip or anything where running out matters, since the failure mode of an old battery is sudden shutdown rather than gradual decline.
And immediately if the battery has swollen — a back panel or screen that has begun to lift. Stop using it, stop charging it, and take it somewhere the same day.
What to ask
Which cell you are getting. Genuine, a reputable equivalent, or unspecified — and the answer should be immediate.
Whether health reporting will work afterwards.
What warranty attaches to the repair, and to the cell specifically.
And whether the water resistance is being restored, which depends on the adhesive being replaced properly and should otherwise be assumed gone.
What to expect afterwards
A device that holds a full day again, which is the point.
A health reading that starts at or near 100%, or nothing at all where pairing was not done.
And a calibration period of a few charge cycles before the reported percentage settles, which is normal and is not a fault.
The device that will not hold a charge after one
Occasionally the battery was not the problem.
A charging circuit fault, a worn port, or a system setting can all present as poor battery life, and replacing the cell does not resolve any of them.
Which is why a shop that tests before replacing is worth more than one that agrees immediately — and why the question about what happens if it does not fix it belongs in the conversation before the work.
A device whose battery health reads high and whose life is poor is a device with something else wrong, and that is establishable before spending anything.
Laptops, which differ
Generally easier, because many laptop batteries are accessible without heat and adhesive — though the trend has moved toward glued cells there too.
And more consequential when they fail, since a swollen laptop cell can distort the case and damage the trackpad or screen from the inside.
The signs are the same: a case that no longer sits flat, a trackpad that has become stiff, a lid that does not close evenly. Any of those is a swollen cell until proven otherwise.
Disposal of the old one
Not in household waste, and not because of a rule so much as a genuine fire risk in collection vehicles.
A shop doing the replacement takes it, which is the simplest route and one of the small advantages of having the work done.
Where you have an old cell at home, retailers and municipal collection points accept them — and a swollen or damaged one should be transported carefully and handed over rather than stored.
Timing it with the rest
Where other work is due, do it together.
A shop opening a device for a screen can fit a battery at a fraction of the additional labour, because the opening is the bulk of the work.
Worth asking even where the battery is not yet failing on a device you intend to keep — a marginal cost now against a full repair later.
