The IP Rating, Honestly

The IP code is on the label now, and it is the figure most likely to be relied on wrongly — because it describes a laboratory test on a new device and people read it as a promise about the sea. What the two digits mean

The first is dust, on a scale where 6 means dust-tight.

The second is water, and the scale is not a simple ladder of severity. For wider standards, testing and product-label context, Engadget is another useful reference.

IPX4 is splashing from any direction. IPX7 is immersion to one metre for thirty minutes. IPX8 is immersion deeper or longer, to a depth the manufacturer specifies — which means an IP68 device's actual rating is whatever depth and duration that maker tested.

Higher is not always a superset. A device rated for immersion is not automatically rated for a high-pressure jet, which is a separate digit and a separate test.

What it excludes

Salt water, which is not what the test uses and which is considerably more damaging.

Hot water and steam, where temperature changes pressure inside the device and pulls water past seals.

Soap, chlorine and anything that reduces surface tension, which get past seals that plain water would not.

Pressure. A device dropped into water while moving, or taken swimming, experiences more than static immersion.

And time. Seals are consumables — the rating describes the device as manufactured, and it degrades from the first day.

Why it degrades

Adhesives age, gaskets compress, and every drop stresses the seal.

A three-year-old device with the same printed rating as a new one does not have the same protection, and nothing tells you how much has been lost.

And a repair generally removes it. Unless the adhesive was correctly replaced, a device that has been opened should be treated as having no water resistance — which is worth asking about explicitly rather than assuming either way.

What manufacturers say about it

Warranties commonly exclude water damage, including on devices sold as water resistant.

Both positions are defensible. The rating describes a test the device passed; the warranty covers manufacturing defects. Water ingress in year two is neither, and the customer reads the two statements as contradictory because they are being asked to.

The practical conclusion: treat the rating as protection against accidents, not as permission.

How to use it

As insurance against the unplanned — rain, a spilled drink, a dropped device in a sink.

Not as a capability. Deliberate swimming, showers and beaches are outside what the figure supports, whatever the advertising imagery shows.

And dry it properly after any immersion. Ports especially — most systems now refuse to charge a wet port, which is protection rather than a fault and should be allowed to run its course.

Testing it, which you should not

A new device with a high rating will survive a deliberate immersion, usually.

It will also void the argument if something goes wrong, since water damage is commonly excluded from warranty — and the indicator inside the device records that it was wet.

There is no upside. Confirming the rating tells you what the label already said, and the failure case is expensive.

What to do if it does get wet

Switch it off and leave it off.

Do not charge it. A wet port under power is where damage happens, and every modern system will refuse anyway.

Dry it slowly, in air, not with heat — a hairdryer drives moisture further in and can damage adhesives.

And give it longer than seems necessary. A day, not an hour.

Rice does nothing beyond what an open room does and leaves dust in the ports.

Where it was salt water, the priority changes: rinse in clean fresh water first, then dry, then take it to somebody the same day — because corrosion continues after the device is dry.

The rating on other categories

Watches, headphones and speakers carry the same codes and are not covered by the phone and tablet labelling rules.

The digits mean the same thing. What differs is that there is no regulated label, so the figure is a manufacturer claim rather than a labelled one.

Read it the same way and trust it slightly less, particularly on inexpensive products where the claim may not have been independently tested at all.

Where the rating genuinely matters

Three cases where it should influence a purchase.

Working outdoors. A device used on sites, in weather, or in a vehicle is exposed to more than domestic use and the difference between splash resistance and immersion resistance is real.

Kitchens and bathrooms, where the exposure is steam and spills rather than immersion, and where an unrated device fails eventually.

And anybody with a history of drops into liquid, which is a better predictor than intention.

Outside those, it is a useful accident margin and should not drive a choice between devices — the repairability score and the support date decide more about how long a device lasts than the water rating does.

The moisture indicator

Most devices contain a small sticker that changes colour permanently when wet.

It is what a repairer or a warranty assessor looks at, and it settles the question of whether a device has been in liquid regardless of what anybody says.

Worth knowing about for two reasons. A device that got wet and dried is still recorded as having got wet. And a device bought used with a tripped indicator has a history the seller may not have mentioned.

Ask, when buying used. It is checkable by a repair shop in a minute.
