This is the commonest reason people conclude a device has aged out, and the remedy is free.
Why a full device behaves badly
Flash storage needs free space to work in. For wider device-longevity and hardware context, XDA is another useful reference.
Writing requires blocks to be erased and rearranged, and a drive close to capacity has fewer to work with — so every write becomes slower.
The system also uses free space for temporary files, caches and swap. With none available, applications are closed to make room and reopen from scratch, which is experienced as the device forgetting what you were doing.
And updates need room to unpack. A device that cannot update is a device that stops receiving the security updates that determine its usable life, for a reason that has nothing to do with support dates.
How much to leave free
Ten to fifteen per cent as a working rule, and more is better.
Below that the effects above begin, and they worsen sharply as the remaining space shrinks.
A device permanently at 98% full is a device being asked to operate in a way it was not designed for, and no amount of restarting addresses it.
Where the space goes
Photographs and video, overwhelmingly.
Then application caches, which grow silently and are frequently the largest single item after media — and which can be cleared without losing anything.
Then downloads and messages, which accumulate attachments nobody remembers receiving.
And then applications themselves, which are usually the smallest part despite being where people look first.
The free remedy
In order of effect.
Move photographs and video off the device, to a computer or a service. This alone resolves most cases.
Clear application caches, which the system will list by size.
Delete downloaded media — offline films, podcasts, maps — which is invisible and substantial.
And remove applications you have not opened in a year, which is the smallest gain and the one people start with.
Half an hour, once, and it produces a device that feels several years younger.
When it is not the storage
A device that is slow with plenty of free space has a different problem — heat, an application misbehaving, or a system update that asks more of the hardware.
Check the free space first because it is the cheapest thing to rule out, and it is the answer more often than anything else.
Buying for it
Storage cannot be added to most modern devices, which makes the decision permanent.
And the amount that is enough grows over time — applications get larger, media resolution increases, and a capacity that was comfortable four years ago is not now.
Which argues for one step above what you currently need on anything you intend to keep, since the alternative is replacing a working device because it is full.
The cloud option, honestly
Moving photographs to a service frees space and creates a subscription.
Which is a real trade rather than a solution — the device is no longer full and there is now a monthly cost that continues for as long as the photographs exist.
The alternatives: a computer with a large drive, an external drive, or periodic culling.
All require a habit where the subscription requires none, which is why the subscription wins in practice.
Where it is chosen deliberately, it is fine. Where a device fills, a prompt appears, and a subscription starts without a decision, that is the tier upgrade nobody revisits in another form.
Optimised storage settings
Most systems offer to keep smaller copies on the device and full versions in a service.
Effective, and it makes the device dependent on a connection for anything not recently viewed — which is a genuine limitation when travelling or where coverage is poor.
Worth switching on for most people and worth knowing what it does, because the surprise arrives at the moment a photograph is needed and will not load.
Storage wear
Flash storage has a finite number of writes and it is not a practical concern for ordinary use.
A device kept permanently full writes more than one with headroom, because of the rearrangement described above — which is a small additional argument for leaving space rather than a reason for concern in itself.
Where it does matter: devices doing continuous recording, and older devices that have been full for years.
The device that will not update
The specific failure worth naming, because it has a deadline attached.
An update needs room to download and to unpack, which is more than the size of the update itself.
A device that has declined updates for months because it is full is accumulating a security gap, and the owner usually believes the device is simply old.
Free the space and update. This is the single most consequential thing on this page, and it is frequently mistaken for a hardware limitation.
What to move first
Video.
A few minutes of high-resolution video occupies what hundreds of photographs do, and most people have footage they have never watched.
Sort by size rather than by date — the system will do it — and the top of that list is usually a handful of files accounting for a large fraction of the problem.
