Almost all buying advice compares devices at the moment of purchase. The more useful question is how long you intend to keep it, because the answer changes which figures matter and by how much. The three horizons
Two years or less. Endurance, camera, screen — the things you experience daily. Durability figures barely matter because you will not reach the point where they do.
Three to five years. The cycle rating, the support date and the repairability score all become decisive, and the daily specification becomes secondary. Decide the horizon before looking at anything, because it determines which half of the label to read.
What changes with the horizon
At two years, buy on experience. The device will be near its rated capacity throughout and nothing on the durability side will have been tested.
At four, buy on the support date first. A device with eighteen months of updates left is an eighteen-month device regardless of what it costs or how good it is.
And plan for one battery replacement, which is expected maintenance rather than a fault and costs a small fraction of a replacement device.
The mismatch that costs most
Buying a flagship and keeping it two years, or a budget device and keeping it five.
The first pays for capability that is discarded before the durability figures matter.
The second buys a shorter support window and worse parts availability for a device expected to outlast both — and it is the more expensive mistake, because the replacement arrives sooner.
Matching the device to the horizon is worth more than any comparison between devices at the same price.
The figures to check, in order
The support date. First, because it is a boundary.
The cycle rating, which determines when the battery becomes an issue.
The repairability score, which determines what happens when something breaks.
The published battery and screen part prices, which convert the score into money.
And then the specification, which is where most buyers start.

What this does not settle
Which of two adequate devices to buy, which is preference and is a legitimate way to decide.
Whether a new device is needed at all — the repair-or-replace question comes first and is frequently answered wrongly.
And anything about price, which moves and which this site does not state as fact.
The horizon people actually have
Longer than they plan for and shorter than they claim.
Most people intend to keep a device "until it stops working" and in practice replace it at three to four years, when a combination of a tired battery, a cracked screen and slowing software makes the next repair not worth it.
Which means the four-year figures are the relevant ones for most buyers, and they are the ones almost no review discusses.
Planning for four years explicitly — one battery replacement, a support date beyond it, a repairability score that makes a screen viable — is a different purchase from planning for none.
Where the horizon is genuinely short
And it is legitimate.
A device for a specific project, a phone for a year abroad, something bought knowing it will be handed on.
Then buy on experience and price, ignore the durability figures, and consider refurbished — which is where a short horizon and a discount align well.
What matters is that the horizon was chosen rather than assumed, since an unexamined assumption is usually "forever" and produces the wrong purchase in the other direction.
Buying for somebody else
A device for a child, a parent, or a household spare has a different profile.
Durability figures matter more, because the device will have a longer life and rougher handling than one you use yourself.
And the support date matters more still, since a device handed down has already used part of its window — which is the calculation nobody makes when passing on an old phone.
Check what is left before deciding it is a gift rather than a short reprieve.
Accessories and the horizon
A small point with a real cost.
Cases, mounts, cables and docks bought for a device are money committed to that device, and replacing it early discards them.
Which argues for buying accessories in proportion to the remaining horizon — a substantial case on a device with three years left is sensible, and the same case on one with eight months is not.
Some accessories outlive several devices and are worth buying well; most do not.
The upgrade that is not one
Replacing a working device with a newer one at the same tier.
Two years of hardware progress is now modest at the middle of the market, and a person replacing a functioning three-year-old device frequently gains less than the cost of a battery replacement would have delivered.
