What is demonstrable rather than speculative: many small appliances are built with sealed construction, adhesive assembly and no available parts, which makes the question of intent secondary to the fact that repair is not possible. What actually fails

What to check before buying

Since there is no label, five things from the manufacturer.

Whether spare parts are sold, and which ones. A maker publishing a parts list is telling you something substantial.

How it is assembled, visible from the outside: screws or glue.

The guarantee length, which correlates loosely with the maker's own expectation.

And whether service documentation exists, which some makers publish and most do not.

Where categories differ

Some appliance categories have their own European ecodesign rules — larger domestic appliances in particular, with parts and information requirements.

Small consumer electronics mostly do not, which is the gap.

And headphones are the clearest case: sealed, glued, batteries not replaceable, no parts, no documentation — a category where a battery reaching end of life ends the product.

The practical response

Buy on repairability signals where they exist, and accept a fixed life where they do not.

Prefer the version with a replaceable battery on anything cordless, even at a premium, since it is the difference between three years and considerably more.

Keep the receipt, since statutory rights are the main protection where a guarantee is short.

And treat "no parts available" as a specification rather than as a discovery to make after a failure.

The repair economics that do not work

Even where a repair is possible, it frequently costs more than replacement.

Labour is the same regardless of what the item cost. An hour of a technician's time against an inexpensive appliance is arithmetic that rarely favours repair.

Three signals worth more than any review.

A published parts list. Rare, decisive, and checkable in a minute.

Screws visible from the outside, which indicate a design intended to be opened.

And a maker with a service operation rather than a replacement policy — the distinction being whether a failed item is repaired or exchanged for a refurbished one.

Where all three are present, the item is likely to outlast its category norm. Where none is, plan accordingly rather than hoping.
