Screens and Repair Cost

A broken screen is the failure that most often ends a device's life, not because it cannot be repaired but because the repair costs enough to make replacement look reasonable. Why it costs what it does
Because it is not a screen.
A modern display is an assembly — the panel, the digitiser that senses touch, the polariser, frequently the front glass and sometimes the earpiece, sensors and frame bonded together. For wider device-longevity and hardware context, 9to5Mac is another useful reference.
Replacing "the glass" alone is possible and is specialist work, requiring the layers to be separated and rebonded. Most shops replace the whole assembly because it is faster and more reliable, and the assembly is the expensive item.
Which is why the figure surprises people. They broke the outer glass and are quoted for the component behind it.
The grades
Not standardised, and the range is wide.
Original assemblies, from the manufacturer's supply chain. Most expensive, correct in every respect.
Refurbished originals — a genuine panel with new glass bonded to it. Good, and dependent entirely on who did the bonding.
And aftermarket panels, which vary enormously. The good ones are close to indistinguishable in ordinary use; the poor ones differ in brightness, colour, viewing angle and touch response, and the difference is visible immediately.
Ask which is being fitted and what the alternative costs. A shop that names the grade without hesitation is the signal.
What a cheap screen actually costs
Not always a mistake.
On a device with eighteen months left, a mid-grade panel at half the price of an original is a rational choice — the device does not need to outlive the compromise.
On one you intend to keep four years, the difference in daily experience compounds and the saving is smaller than it looks.
Where the difference matters most: brightness outdoors, colour accuracy if you work with images, and touch behaviour at the edges — which is the one people notice and cannot name.
What else changes
Pairing. Automatic brightness and colour calibration commonly stop working with a non-paired assembly.
Water resistance. The screen is bonded with adhesive that forms part of the seal, and unless it is correctly replaced the rating is gone.
And sometimes a sensor — the proximity sensor that blanks the screen during a call is a frequent casualty, and it is worth testing before leaving the shop.
Preventing it
A case with corner protection, since point impact at a corner is the commonest cause.
A case that extends past the screen, so a face-down drop lands on the case rather than the glass.
And the drop class when buying, which is now a comparable figure and matters most for anybody who has broken one before.
These are cheap against the repair, which is the whole argument.
The crack you can live with
Not every broken screen needs immediate repair.
A crack at an edge, with the panel working and touch unaffected, is cosmetic — and a device in that state can run for years.
What makes it urgent: glass that is lifting or shedding, touch that has become unreliable, or discolouration spreading from the crack, which indicates the panel itself rather than the front glass.
And moisture. A cracked screen has lost whatever sealing it had, which converts an ordinary spill into a serious event.
Where a repair is deferred, a screen protector over the crack holds the glass together and prevents shedding, which is a genuine stopgap rather than a fix.
Burn-in and other panel failures
Distinct from breakage and worth separating.
Static elements retained faintly on the display, on panel types susceptible to it, after long exposure to the same image.
Not repairable, and it is a wear characteristic rather than a defect — which means a warranty claim generally fails unless it appears abnormally early.
Reduced by lowering brightness and by not leaving a static image on screen for hours, which is most of what can be done.
Dead pixels and lines, by contrast, are panel faults and are worth raising as such.
Testing a replacement before leaving
Four things, and they take two minutes.
Touch at every edge and corner, which is where poor digitiser bonding shows.
Brightness at maximum, outdoors if possible.
The proximity sensor, by making a call and putting the device to your ear.
And the front camera and earpiece, both of which sit in the assembly and are commonly disturbed.
Raising any of these in the shop is straightforward. Raising them a week later is not.
Where the panel type matters
Two broad families, and they age differently.
One is susceptible to retained images after long static exposure and is otherwise excellent.
The other is not, and differs in contrast and in how it handles brightness.
Neither is better generally and the distinction matters for one specific use: a device displaying a fixed interface for hours daily — a mounted display, a point-of-sale device, a navigation screen — where retention is a real consideration.
For ordinary use it is not a factor, and choosing on it is optimising for a case most people never reach.

Protect it before it breaks, because the repair is the one that turns a working device into a replacement decision.
