Telling them apart
Dirt behaves consistently. The cable needs to be pushed harder, or held at an angle, and the behaviour is the same with every cable.

And a worn port allows a cable to fall out under its own weight, which is mechanical and is not going to improve.

What dirt actually is
Pocket lint, compacted.
A port collects fibres with every insertion, and they compress into a solid layer at the base — which prevents the cable seating fully and produces exactly the symptoms above.
