What genuinely helps

Avoiding regular full discharges to zero. Deep discharges stress a lithium cell, and a device that habitually runs flat ages faster than one that does not.
Using optimised charging where the device offers it — the feature that learns your schedule and delays the final portion until you wake. Free, automatic, and it removes the main cost of overnight charging.
And a charge limit around 80%, where the device offers one and where you do not need the full capacity. A genuine trade: less capacity daily, more capacity in year three.
What stopped mattering
Charging overnight. Modern devices stop at full and manage what follows. This was true of an older chemistry and has not been true for many years.
Letting it discharge fully before charging. Advice for nickel-based batteries with a memory effect. Lithium cells have no memory effect and deep discharges are actively harmful.
Using a third-party charger. Provided it is a properly made one from a reputable maker, the device negotiates the rate and takes what it wants. A poorly made charger is a genuine hazard — that is a safety point rather than a battery-life one.
Closing applications to save battery. Does nothing for health, and on some systems uses more energy than leaving them suspended.
And charging in short bursts against long ones. A cycle is a total quantity of energy and it makes no difference how it is delivered.
The one that depends
Fast charging.
It is not harmful in itself — devices manage the rate and slow as the battery fills.
It generates heat, and heat is what does the damage. So fast charging a cool device on a desk is fine, and fast charging a hot device in a car in summer is the case to avoid.
Which makes it a question about circumstances rather than about the feature, and the answer is to use it when convenient and not while the device is already warm.
Wireless charging
Less efficient, therefore warmer, therefore slightly worse for the battery at the same delivered energy.
The difference is modest and it is a convenience most people reasonably accept.
Where it matters: overnight on a warm pad, in a warm room, which is the combination that turns a small effect into a measurable one.

Three habits, and they take no effort.
Do not leave it in the sun. Do not let it run flat regularly. Switch on optimised charging.

Cables and ports
Adjacent to charging and a genuine cause of trouble.
A cable that has to be held at an angle is a worn cable or a dirty port, and continuing to use it stresses the port — which is one of the four things that fail.
Replace cables when they become unreliable rather than working around them, since a cable is inexpensive and a port repair is not.
And clean the port before concluding anything is broken. Pocket lint compacts into the connector and is the commonest cause of a charging problem that looks like a failure.
Charge levels and long storage
A device being put away for months should not be stored full or empty.
Around half, somewhere cool, and checked occasionally — a deeply discharged cell may not recover, which is the one storage mistake with a permanent consequence.
Battery cases and power banks
Neither harms a device, and both add heat while in use.
A power bank charging a phone in a bag is two batteries working in an enclosed space, which is the heat case again in a different form.

Why the folklore persists
Because it was true once, and because it costs nothing to repeat.
Nickel-based batteries genuinely had a memory effect, and the advice to discharge fully was correct for them. The chemistry changed and the advice did not.
It also feels like care. Deliberately managing a charge level is an act of attention, and attention feels protective even where it does nothing.
And nobody is corrected. A person charging their phone the wrong way experiences no visible consequence, so the belief survives indefinitely.
Which is why the useful response is not to argue with the habits but to name the one that actually matters — heat — since a person who moves their attention there gets the benefit regardless of what they believe about overnight charging.
What a battery health reading tells you about your habits
Compare it against the cycle count where the system shows both.
A device at 85% after 400 cycles is ageing faster than the rating implies, and heat is the usual explanation.
One at 90% after 700 cycles is doing well, and whatever the owner is doing is working.
It is the only feedback available on any of this, and it takes one look in the settings.
